It is seamlessly silken in feel, with opulently ripe orchard fruit and nearly glycerol concentration offset by a saline resonance throughout. Spicy notes emerge on the finish, which is incredibly long and full of zesty tension, nearly crunchy in texture. Expertly balanced. This wine is a mix of the Yamhill Valley and Pearlstad Vineyards.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cstrong\u003e\u003cem\u003e- By Eric Guido, July 2025\u003cbr\u003e\u003c\/em\u003e\u003c\/strong\u003eMy visit with Evan Martin started with a tour of the Koosah and Pearlstad Vineyards, two sites I’ve been very excited to get to know better. Koosah, planted between 2016 and 2020, has already become one of the most formidable sources for high-elevation Pinot Noir and Chardonnay in Oregon. As for Pearlstad, I was amazed to find Martin’s parcels littered with friable white stones. These sites are situated just over a ridgeline from one another but are remarkably different. The Martin Woods house style matched the 2023 vintage well. Martin explained, “We couldn't believe how early we were picking, about a week earlier than usual. But it's better to pick early than to pick late. In the end, we have lower alcohols but excellent density.”  Martin employs long macerations (about 25 days) with minimal punchdowns and no pumpovers, creating more of an infusion, almost like steeping tea. The wines are aged on lees without racking. The 2023 Pinot Noirs saw 12–15% new French oak. The results are spectacular—perfumed, elegant, deep and structured reds. Chardonnays are equally successful, as is an excellent Rocks District Syrah that blends fruit from Rockbar and River Rock Vineyards for a Rhône-inspired, savory profile. The Rare Species Collection is also of note. These extremely limited-production wines utilize Oregon oak barrels—Martin ages the staves outside the winery and assembles them with French oak heads. These barrels lend the wines a beguiling spiciness and a pine-resin-like quality that I find wildly attractive. That contrast is what makes the wine so compelling. Yamhill Valley contributes ripe orchard fruit, texture and generosity, while Pearlstad brings salinity, mineral definition and freshness. The wine spends 18 months in barrel, but with only around 5–10% new oak, the élevage builds texture without burying the fruit or terroir.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp dir=\"auto\"\u003eThe 2023 is remarkably expressive, showing poached pear, green apple, apricot and citrus alongside crushed stone, savory herbs, hazelnut and a subtle touch of honey. It is silky and concentrated through the middle, but persistent acidity and a deeply saline character keep it energetic and precise. It lands beautifully between those extremes, combining Meursault-like breadth with the freshness and mineral character that have made the best Willamette Valley Chardonnays so exciting.
