The 2023 Pelaverga Speziale is terrific. In fact, the 2023 is one of the best editions I have tasted. Crushed red berry fruit, watermelon and sweet floral notes add an attractive exotic quality. In many vintages, I find the Alessandria Pelaverga a touch green. That is not at all the case here. - By Antonio Galloni on January 2025
Vittore Alessandria's 2021 Barolos are hugely promising. Because of the timing of my trip, I tasted the wines just prior to bottling. Harvest was October 7 and 8 for the San Lorenzo and Monvigliero respectively, then October 14 for the Gramolere. The 2021s saw about 30 days on the skins, with submerged cap maceration. Aging was done in cask. These Barolos can be a bit shy out of the gate, but they blossom with a few years in bottle.
Pelaverga di Verduno "Speziale" is a red wine from Piedmont produced by the Fratelli Alessandria company. The color is brilliant ruby red, the nose conquers with delicate floral aromas, spicy hints and aromas of small berries. On the palate it is agile, fresh and dynamic, with a light and silky tannic texture. Bright cranberry color with mauve reflections. Airy strawberry and white tea notes on the nose with undertones of dried rose petal, whole white peppercorn, wet rock. The palate is juicy and spicier with more herbaceous flavors of sage and thyme coming through. Perfect for roasted bird, creamy pastas, charred broccolini with lemon zest and Calabrian chilies.
Vineyard notes: The red "Speziale" is produced with Pelaverga Piccolo grapes, which come from various company crus, which are all found within the territory of the municipality of Verduno: Riva Rocca, Campasso, Boscatto, Neirane, Sotto Orti and Galleria. The vines are grown in a hilly area, at an altitude between 250 and 400 metres, on calcareous soils. The vines have an average age of about 20 years and are Guyot trained, with a density of about 4500 vines per hectare.
