And now that Joël has passed on, the traditional torch is proudly carried by his sons, Romain and Maxime. Like their father and grandfather, they continue to make arguably Côte Rôtie’s most uncompromisingly classic wines. By far the single best bargain from the appellation today!

The Viallière vineyard's Guardian

The Viallière terroir, an ideally southeast-facing slope of dark brown, fine mica-rich schist, can produce kaleidoscopically nuanced, broodingly powerful, and very long-lived Côte Rôtie.

Chanpet’s vines are all in the great La Viallière lieu-dit. As late as the 1960s, La Viallière was almost completely covered with woods, but Emile saw the crumbling Roman-era terraces and understood the potential as a previously great site for vines. One other crazy vigneron was also making wines there and has since disappeared (1989 was his last vintage) as he had no heirs. His wines becoming true unicorn bottlings: Albert Dervieux

Between Emile and his son Joël, it took 35 years of working by hand to re-plant just three hectares. This is an extraordinary illustration of what Côte Rôtie’s true believers were willing to do at a time when the extrinsic rewards were so small. But the result of Emile’s labor and vision is today the iconic example of La Viallière.

La Vialliere is a steeply pitched (50% slope) vineyard chiseled out of the side of a mountain in the hard rock schiste terraces of Cote-Rotie that produces some of the top Syrah in the world! Vaguely floral notes hints of black olives and licorice add complexity to the bouquet while on the palate this medium to full-bodied effort still shows some appealing baby fat an expansive yet structured feel and ample length on the finish. Made entirely with whole bunches and matured exclusively in older wood (mainly larger format barrels) the Côte Rôtie from Champet is resolutely traditional in style made from their holdings in La Viallière. A new bottling called Les Fils à Jo is aged in smaller barrels but again the oak is older leaving virtually no mark on the wine. Expect traditional largely savory notes of violets cracked pepper fine leather cloves olives and the like in these wines which tend to be lower in alcohol than many of their peers lighter in body and built as much around acidity as they are extract.
