These wines are never scored - they don't need to be as they sell out every vintage. They also don't make very much and to be honest can care less about making a wine to get some person to they don't know and does not know them to arbitrarily critique a wine. The point of this wine is pleasure, pure and simple - it is joyful, delicious and honest about what it is.
100% Malbec (aka Auxerrois locally). The fruit for the entry-level Pur comes from seven different Combel sites totalling 8.5 hectares around their home village of Cournou, which lies on the Causse Calcaire, a limestone plateau in Cahors at 320-350 meters in elevation. Planted on clay-limestone soils, the vines are certified-organic (in conversion to biodynamic farming), average 30 years old and are kept to a modest 40 hl/ha yield. The bunches are hand-harvested and mainly destemmed but with up to 20% directly pressed as whole clusters; the juice ferments at cool temperatures with indigenous yeasts in cement and steel tanks with around two week of maceration. The wine is aged on its lees in cement through the winter and bottled unfiltered in the spring. Sulfur throughout vinification and aging is minimal. - importer
Tasting Note
Deep ruby red, malbec always has a pen ink dark core and bright vibrant ruby edges and this is no exception. The nose rises easily from the glass with notes of bing cherry, raspberry, currants, with a spice and perfumed lift, a very enticing and appealing start. The palate is med to med+ bodied, with med grain tannin that are fine grained and polished. The flavors fan out over the palate and deliver a cascade of fruit, spice, and savory all in a fresh and long finish. You immediately want to go back and sniff and sip more! Charming, joyful, and CHEAP - this is hard to beat for the price!
