As always, its tannic spine is very much front and center. Sage, mint, tobacco, dried leaves, incense and dark red fruit race across the palate. Here too, the wine impresses with its delineation, site character and overall depth, all qualities that are hard to find in 2022. Give this a few years to soften.

Alex Sánchez and Elena Brovia turned out a superb set of 2022 Barolos. Their Barolo Rocche is one of my early favorites in this very challenging vintage. The 2022s were vinified in cement with ambient yeasts. Sánchez added that the 2022s spent a few more days on the skins than in most years, as the wines extracted slowly. Sánchez and Brovia shortened time in cask to 18 months from the more customary 24, a well-judged call given the style of the vintage. The last few years have not been easy at Brovia because of family issues that resulted in a split between sisters Elena and Cristina Brovia. As for the wines, they are superb. - Galloni January 2026

94 points Wine Advocate
The Brovia 2022 Barolo Villero is initially shy and benefits from a little extra time in the decanter. With air, it reveals the defining mineral signature that is so often part and parcel of this celebrated MGA, framing delicate notes of redcurrant and damson plum. The overall impression is bright and elegant with lovely transparency despite a considerable 15% alcohol content. This is a beautiful wine, but it does not quite reach the heights of recent editions, which delivered greater depth and complexity. The 2022 ultimately finishes on a lean note, suggesting that the vintage's warm growing season has tempered some of Villero's customary power and persistence. - Monica Larner July 2026
