Growing up in Fleurie, Yann Bertrand has Beaujolais in his blood coming from a winemaking family! Yann learned from the masters of Beaujolais : Jean Foillardand Yvon Metras. Foillard is a personal favorite of mine based in Morgon and Metras is unicorn like in availability and makes very good Fleurie wines.
All of the Fleurie wines come from organically farmed vines from the 7.5 hectare family vineyard block known as Grand Pré. The vines are 35-115 years old, planted on extremely fine sandy granite soils, and all winemaking is done using cold carbonic whole cluster fermentations. In 2013, the entire vineyard was certified organic. Additionally, Yann took on 1.5 hectares to farm on his own using biodynamic principles. Thanks to incredible farming and a knack for Gamay, Yann Bertrand has justifiably become one of the most sought-after producers in the region
Our Tasting Note: Vivid garnet-red in the glass. Aromas of black cherry, kirsch and a hint of cocoa powder, with subtle smoky granitic minerality. On the palate it is rich yet finely tuned — concentrated dark red fruit, powdery tannins and a lively, fresh acidic backbone carry through to a tight, dynamic finish. A bold-spirited wine that remains elegant, with great potential for 5-8 years’ evolution.
Morgon Dynamite is the confidential cuvée made from the tiny sliver of vines at Grand Pré that reach across the boundary into Morgon. So while the label says Morgon, the soul is definitely in Fleurie. Like everything at the domaine, this wine is naturally vinified without any added yeast or SO2.
