One of the few Barberas that can age and deepen it's complexity
An “important” Barbera with the structure and complexity to age in the cellar. From several old-vine Barbera plots around the village of Monleale. Calcerous and clay soil vineyards produce wines with acidity and structure. Aging in used barriques for about two years and at least an additional year in bottle. No filtration. A perfect recipe for a great Piemontese red wine!
Grape: 100% Barbera.
Vineyards : Three plots around Monleale (Colli Tortonesi DOC):
Bigolla: 1.25 hectares, planted 1965 and ’68, calcareous soils, eastern exposure.
Campolungo: 1.4 hectares, planted 2002, clayey soils, northern exposure.
Fontana: 1.28 hectares, planted 1978 and ’84.
Altitude: 250-280 m / 920 ft.
Soils: Calcerous and clay soils.
Exposure: Mostly eastern and northern exposures.
Vine age: 12-50 years old, Guyot trained, hand harvested.
Viticulture: Native yeasts, minimal or no filtration, no pesticides or herbicides.
Aging: In used 228-liter barriques for about 22 months, then in bottle for at least a year and often more (depending on the vintage).
* I'm 92 points if I had to score this, there is ZERO rusticity in the wine and is instead starting to just show some very attractive tertiary notes offsetting the fruit and charm of the 2015 vintage. Pronounced in the nose and plate intensity, with a long finish. Full bodied, balanced and dense, this is light on it's feet for the depth of flavor and intensity.
Galloni: The 2015 Barbera Monleale is packed with inky, super-ripe red/purplish fruit, leather, spice, game, licorice and incense. Exuberant but also a bit rustic, the 2015 delivers tons of avor intensity and plenty of personality. It is very much a wine for the dinner table.
