Marie Courtin Efflorescence Blanc de Noirs Extra Brut 2019
Marie Courtin Efflorescence Blanc de Noirs Extra Brut 2019
For Comparison 2018:
94 pts Galloni - Vinous
The 2018 Extra Brut Efflorescence, 100% Pinot Noir, is superb. Rich, ample and creamy, the 2018 is super-impressive. Old vines yield a Pinot of real character and nuance that stands out in a vintage in which so many wines are on the lighter side. Time in the glass releases so much Pinot breadth, structure and textural intensity. Hints of spice, kirsch and dried flowers linger. No dosage. Disgorged: December 2023.

Dominique Moreau's Champagnes have gone through a meaningful evolution since I began tasting them years ago. Although often compelling, the wines could be excessively stark, even austere. That is hardly the case these days. These remain extremely precise Champagnes, starting with an intense focus in the vineyard and minimal handling in the cellar, but the wines aren't as piercing as they once were. Some of the Champagnes are labeled Extra Brut—they are all bottled with no dosage. I was deeply impressed with these new releases.
For Dominique, “Efflorescence” refers to “something that evolves in perpetuity” or a slow unfolding. Starting with the evolution encouraged by the small oxygen exchange in barrel, she feels that this wine in particular will reveal itself over time and is particularly ageworthy.
