Drink Date: 2025 - 2033
There is something ethereal about the 2022 Finca Pombeiras that I like very much. It comes from one of their oldest vineyards, planted with a field blend of 70% Mencía and the rest a myriad of other varieties, Brancellao, Merenzao, Garnacha, Mouratón, Negreda and Sousón. It fermented with 100% full clusters in large barrels and matured in 500-liter barrels for 12 months. The palate is silky and elegant and the tannins very fine, and it's fine-boned and balanced. It has contained ripeness and only 12.5% alcohol. With time in the glass, the character of the slate soils comes through, making it mineral-driven. Only 800 bottles produced. It was bottled in July 2024.
Place: Ribeira Sacra, Galicia
Varieties: Almost entirely Mencía, with a few vines of local varieties intermixed.
Vineyard: From single 1.2 Ha parcel (Pombeiras) of seventy-plus year-old vines at the center of the slope in Amandi. The vineyard is planted on a mix of granite and schist. Vinification Method: The grapes were harvested by hand and fermented with native yeasts on the skins in used French oak vats with 100% whole clusters. After fermentation, the wine was racked to 225 L and 500L used French oak barrels, where it rested for more than a year. No fining, no filtering, and only a small sulfur addition at bottling.
