The 2023 Rotenberg in this vintage reverted to its German cadastral name, as the French translation La Colline Rouge was used for wines that had skin maceration. This was made from directly pressed grapes, namely a field blend of Pinot Gris and Riesling rooted in south-facing, red-tinged Jurassic limestone. The nose offers vivid apple crunch, slight smokiness and beautifully crunchy apple skin. The palate is smooth, bright and fluid in nature, with the freshness and inherent coolness of limestone. This is streamlined, juicy and vivid, with an almost imperceptible 8.5 g/L of residual sweetness.

A red soil, a hot climate, and a tropical wine
The first limestone slab of the great Oolite, inclined towards the East and standing erect like a sentinel facing the South and the plain, the Rotenberg is the earliest Terroir of Bergheim. Its red soil, marked by iron, is deeply calcareous and the highly solar climate is the shared home of Riesling and Pinot Gris. The wines show the characteristics of citrus, less candied than on Grasberg, but fine and very elegant. Rotenberg wines are to be served fairly young. They are fresh and airy with a very aromatic lemony acidic note that is ideal when served with the best types of fish, which are thus illuminated in light that is … almost geological!
