The "El Monte" estate vineyard is the single vineyard to source the Monte Real Gran Reserva. Aged for 36 months in 50% French oak and 50% American oak barrels (new for the first year) followed by refining in the bottle for a minimum of 24 months.
100% Tempranillo from Cenicero in Rioja Alta "el Monte" single vineyard
Fermentation: Destemmed and fermented in large upright wood tinas.
Aging: Aged for 24 to 30 months in French and American casks, followed by 24 months in bottle.
92+ pts John Gilman (View From the Cellar)
The 2004 vintage has produced a very fine bottle of Monte Real Gran Reserva. The wine is starting to show a bit of this cuvée’s youthful plumminess on both the nose and palate, with the bouquet offering up a fine blend of black cherries, plums, Cuban cigars, fresh nutmeg, cinnamon, a touch of celery seed, toasted coconut and a really lovely base of soil elements. On the palate, the wine is deep, full-bodied, complex and very classy in profile, with a fine core, moderate tannins and impressive length and grip on the poised, complex finish. This is still a good five years away from its true plateau of maturity, but it is evolving beautifully and will be a top-flight vintage of Monte Real. - John Gilman, April 2020
