Tasting Note: Medium ruby color. Medium+ nose of delicate floral notes with more intense aromas of red berry and cherry fruits, a hint of sandalwood and spices from the judicious use of new/used oak. Well-balanced and complex with well-integrated silky, and fine tannin. A velvety finish with slightly spicy notes and persistent red fruits and florals. A beautiful, typical expression of Volnay.

Vintage notes: After a rainy winter and March, spring settled in firmly in April with the first days of warmth. The mild weather of May and early June encouraged rapid vine growth. The summer was very warm, bordering on drought from the lack of rains that led to an early and uncomplicated harvest to start on August 28th.

Vineyard: Monthélie is a small village to the west of the hill, which also includes the village of Volnay. Clos Gauthey is located in the heart of the appellation between the villages of Meursalt and Pommard.

Note From Tom: I tasted a few of their wines at a La Paulee event and they caught my attention standing out in a crowded field as well made classically styled wines.  Based in the village of Beaune, this is a negociant domaine which means they purchase fruit from other growers to make their wines. Now, they also have PLENTY of their own vineyards they make wine from as well, particularly the not often seen monopole 1er vineyard Feves (a stand out in my tasting). Fast forward a couple weeks, a representative from Domaine Chanson conducted a tasting of their wines in our back yard in Raleigh.  These are some of the first 2023s I have tasted, and I liked most of what I tried.  The overall assessment was this was a very good vintage, a warm year like 2022 that produced balanced wines that retained freshness with very good acidities, with minerality and terroir authentic to site and appellation!
