This is a strong set of wines from Cantina del Pino, but readers tasting this range need to be prepared to give the wines considerable aeration. The Barbarescos spend three weeks on the skins. Some of the tanks may also see submerged cap maceration. Aging is 24 months in 20-25HL casks. Brother and sister Francesco and Luisa Rocca are doing a tremendous job of continuing the work that their father began here in the late 1970s, while also charting what looks like an extremely bright future. The 2022 Barbarescos are just as impressive as they were last year, if not more so. There will be no Riservas or Maria Adelaide, as the best lots were used for the core wines, all Barbarescos that are deeply expressive of site. The tannins are a bit edgy in the young 2022s, but time should help, as another year in bottle has already helped these wines since I first tasted them in September 2024. I find the 2023s just a touch more refined, especially in the tannins, suggesting better overall physiological ripeness in the skins and seeds. One of the recent evolutions here has been a shortening of time in cask by a few months, which I think benefits the wines.

“Two thousand twenty-two was not as hot as 2017, but it was exceptionally dry everywhere. All of our vines experienced heat stress,” Francesco Rocca explained. “In 2023, on the other hand, some vines suffered quite a bit, but others did better, especially those with deeper root systems and sites that are not as directly exposed to the sun. The house style: elegant wines with a watermark of traditional Barolo Serralunga terroir.

Farming is free of synthetic chemicals and tailored to the unique ecology of the Principiano property, which has become an oasis teeming with biodiversity thanks to Ferdinando’s ongoing initiative to preserve and establish natural spaces around the vineyards. Forested areas, some ancient, weave through the vine area, and a frog pond nestled at the base of his Boscareto Cru attracts migratory bird populations. So life-abundant is the Principiano property that the Ravera vineyard was selected as an observation site for University of Torino’s research on the repopulation of wild orchid and butterfly communities. The wines themselves pulse with energy, tension and lustrous fruit. Barolo di Serralunga is 80% from the Boscareto vineyard and 20% from the Lirano vineyard. Boscareto’s limestone soils give depth and minerality, while Lirano’s sandy soils give an added airiness and elegance to the fruit. Boscareto fruit is vinified 100% whole cluster for the cru bottling, a portion of which goes into the Serralunga bottling. Since then, Conterno and his team have made a series of stellar wines. There are three Gattinaras in the range. The straight Gattinara is the most approachable of the wines and is therefore released a year earlier, although aging for all three wines is three years in wood. The two vineyard designates – Molsino and Valferrana – offer different shades of complexity, finesse and intensity, depending on the year. The Molsino is the first of the two single vineyards to ripen and can be a bigger wine, while the Valferrana ripens later because of its somewhat more sheltered position. After racking, the wine matures for 30 months in big oak casks and, finally, it matures in the bottle for 12 months before release.

Made from grapes cultivated in Monforte d’Alba, this Barolo has a wonderful elegance to its bouquet, good strength, and excellent alcohol.

Variety:
Nebbiolo

Vineyard of production:
Monforte d’Alba

Average age of vineyards:
30 years

First year of production:
2010

Winemaking:
Crushing-destemming followed by maceration in contact with skins. The Barolo Vite Talin sees submerged cap fermentation followed by two years in tonneaux and a third year in cask.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0075/0338/0543/files/Sandrone-Barolo-Le-Vignebottle1000x_b29424c1-c77a-437a-b887-478070a7c7ce.png?v=1763925948
cascina-penna-currado-barbera-d-alba-carra-2022
Cascina Penna-Currado 'Carrà' Barbera d’Alba 2023

90-93 Vinous
Drinking Window 2025 - 2035
Tasted from cask, the 2023 Barbera d’Alba Carrà is hugely promising. Carrà comes from the San Sebastiano area of Monforte d’Alba, a high-altitude site shaped by cool air currents, late harvests and a landscape rich in natural biodiversity. Sourced primarily from old-vine parcels planted in 1965 and 2000, the vineyard combines the concentration of mature vines with the freshness that defines this corner of Monforte. Fermented in stainless steel and aged in large oak botti, this release totals 13,300 bottles and stands out for its depth and commanding presence. Published: Jul 23, 2026

Winemaking & Aging

All wines are fermented in stainless steel tanks

All wines aged in large neutral oak casks (botti) 25-50hL

Aged for 36 Months in botti

Bottle Aged for 8 Months prior to release

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0075/0338/0543/files/main_shopify_bottle_template_0468744c-4a38-4168-b6ba-7f58c0a87a0f.png?v=1746794355
azelia-barolo-san-rocco-2020
Azelia Barolo San Rocco 2020

93pts Wine Advocate
From producer Luigi Scavino, the Azelia 2020 Barolo San Rocco draws its fruit from Serralunga d'Alba. This finishes with notable substance and explosive resonance.

Vineyard: Sourced from the Casasse vineyard in Neive.
