Azelia Barolo Margheria 2021
Azelia Barolo Margheria 2021
The classic! Sixty year old vines planted on two hectares of land in Serralunga. Southwest facing, Guyot-trained. Fermented with indigenous yeast, aged in large casks for 30 months. The Margheria is pursued in every vintage by loyal Barolo buyers for this is the greatest example of this Grand Cru Barolo site.

The Scavino family owns almost two of Margheria’s 8ha and boasts vines that are upwards of 65 years old. Here, calcareous white clay with a substantial component of silt yields sturdily structured wines, yet Azelia’s example serves this up with an equal measure of refinement. The 2021 wafts with warm earth and currant blossom. Full and darkly fruited, it makes a strong and immediate tannic impact. But as commanding as the tannins are, they remain smooth in texture and are padded by a fleshy layer. The salty twisty is salivating. This will certainly benefit from a few years in the cellar.

Drinking Window 2026 - 2033
The 2021 Barolo Margheria is dense, powerful and rather somber. Black fruit, lavender, espresso and gravel add to an impression of gravitas. Readers will have to be patient, as the 2021 is an infant. Muscular tannins make themselves known on the finish. This feels a bit raw and not totally put together yet. - By Antonio Galloni on January 2025
