Bottled in April 2024, this vintage shows the immense power and complexity that likens it to 2016, another year for collectors. The 2021 Barbaresco offers medium-rich density that is transmitted both to the wine's appearance and its mouthfeel. There is black fruit, spice and a touch of nutmeg. Translucent yet deep and wonderfully expressive the Boca shows just how expressive Nebbiolo and Vespolina can be here. Sweet red cherry, spice, tobacco and mint gradually blossom in a super-finessed yet deep wine with class and pedigree to burn. Tasted next to the 2011, the 2010 is quite a bit more reticent and in need of time in bottle. The classically austere style will hold considerable appeal to traditionalists. Well, that’s now complete: a spacious, chichi space with sofas, a walk-in cool-room to house back vintages and a large table for tasting. That’s not the big news. No, the headline is that in July 2022, Clerget bought Domaine Regis Rossignol-Changarnier and its eight hectares of vine. These were split with fellow winemaker Arnaud Baillot, though as Clerget put the deal together, he essentially got first dibs on which vineyards he wanted to add to his Pommard/Volnay-focused portfolio. Each ended up with four hectares. Apropos the 2022s, note that Clerget was advising Rossignol-Changarnier’s chef de culture on how to farm the vines before the acquisition. Hence, it isn’t a case of having zero control of viticulture before the deal went through. I used some whole bunch on the reds, depending on the vineyard. I like the 2022 vintage as we have balance and freshness. Clerget has been using WineGlobes for a couple of vintages now and experimented with a cuvée completely matured in the glass containers – his debut Volnay Clos des Angles. As I remarked to Clerget, I am unconvinced that they offer a viable alternative to oak barrels. Indeed, I feel he thinks the same way and mentioned that for 2023, that cuvée combines WineGlobe and oak barrel.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0075/0338/0543/files/yvonnClergetPommardRugiens1er_0387441a-b689-4948-82a3-7190bbfd9c21.png?v=1788366206
domaine-du-bagnol-cassis-2022
Domaine du Bagnol Cassis Rose 2025

$29.99 on 6+ bottles

Blend: Grenache (50%), Cinsault (30%), Mourvedre (20%)
Harvested by hand; pressed directly and rapidly for minimal extraction; spontaneously fermented; aged on the fine lees in stainless steel for 4-5 months with only 10 milligrams per liter of sulfur added.
Soil: Clay-limestone
Age: from 10 to 40 years old
Vine Yields: 30 hl/ha
Farming: Certified organic

Our Take:
No estate expresses the salt-kissed limestone-driven terroir of the idyllic Provençal seaside village of Cassis like Domaine du Bagnol, and the current generation, Sébastien Genovesi, crafts a rosé of scintillating energy, chiseled calcareous musculature, and gleaming red fruits. Greek sailors from Phocaea established the nearby colony of Massalia (modern-day Marseille) in the sixth century BC, bringing their viticultural savvy to the region and planting what are thought to be Provence's first vineyards. The Romans later made their way here, establishing Cassis as an important fishing and commercial port while further developing the wine trade. Local wines earned an excellent reputation over the centuries, especially a sweet Muscat said to be among the Mediterranean's finest. In 1865, phylloxera struck, effectively destroying Provence's vineyards; when Cassis was replanted in the subsequent years, Muscat was left out in favor of Ugni Blanc, Clairette, and other grapes selected for production of dry whites. In 1936, Cassis gained the distinction of being named among France’s first official AOCs, in the elite company of Tavel and Châteauneuf-du-Pape.

Cassis is not only an active port, but what Kermit calls “an earthly paradise.” The vineyards of Clos Sainte Magdeleine are particularly stunning: they jut out on a private cape to meet majestic limestone bluffs, poised spectacularly above the sparkling, azure waters. Paul Clary took a big risk in 2000 when he planted Pinot Noir and Syrah in this extremely cold and windy site. The ranch is now owned and tended by Drew Beuchley and the same crew that has worked these vines since they were planted. The Coast Range Mountains in Northern California run parallel to the coastline but take a sudden dip and nearly disappear around Bodega Bay in Sonoma County. It is at this point that cool air over the Pacific Ocean is drawn inland via convective forces through the Petaluma Gap, moderating the climate in this entire section of the Sonoma Coast. Our coldest vineyard for Syrah, Clary has been harvested as late as November 18th at under 12% alcohol. The protracted growing season paired with the sedimentary clay-loam soils slow the ripening and allow us to farm without irrigation resulting in fruit that is deeply pigmented and loaded with flavor. Today's wine comes from just inland of the sea, yet it tastes as if it were grown on those sun-drenched cliffs, bathed in Mediterranean sea spray. We first discovered this wine a few years ago, and after revisiting it with one of our importers a couple of weeks ago, we knew we wanted to keep it in steady rotation. With the current weather we are having, this feels like the perfect bottle to share with our audience. It captures exactly what we crave in hot weather: freshness, energy, and a natural affinity for the lighter foods of summer. The concept here comes from the skin contact, which varies depending on the acidity and the ripeness; in very warm years, they avoid full skin contact because it lowers acidity. Here we're talking 12 hours at 12 degrees Celsius for 70% of the grapes, so it's not at all an "orange" wine. In fact, the color is as pale as the Muros Antigos. The difference here is the soils where the grapes grow—in the Quinta da Torre, the soils are alluvial (still granitic) but with a little more clay (8%) and more resistance to drought. It started quite shy, but the wine is more aromatic and floral; it has more volume and is more concentrated, because of the soils and the skin contact. It comes in at 12.5% alcohol, a pH of 3.3 and seven grams of acidity—a little of those factors is what happens with the alluvial soils, but the higher pH is because there's more potassium for the grapes and the acidity is also higher; but it's more because of the temperature, which in the Quinta da Torre, a valley, is lower at night than in the slopes from Melgaço, where the grapes from Muros Antigos come from. 360,000 bottles produced. Tangy flor and mouthwatering salinity intertwine on the palate, unencumbered by fortification, and the wine is simultaneously rich and sprightly, with an assertive character that stops short of punchiness. 12% alcohol ~importer

Winery:
Everything suggests that the origin of Andalusian biological ageing should be dated back to the second half of the eighteenth century, halfway between Sanlúcar (providing the wines) and Cádiz (providing the market and commercial channels in the form of the tabancos de montañeses where the beneficial effects of the flor were first appreciated).

Everything likewise indicates that in those days the practice of fortification was infrequent in the white wines destined to local consumption. We gather that from Agustín Fernández’s 1801 article on “Vineyard and winemaking practices in San Lucar de Barrameda”, published in issue 213 of that admirable source of information that was the Semanario de Agricultura y Artes dirigido a los Párrocos. After stating that the best grapes were the “listanes” (palomino fino) and the best vineyards those of “tierras blancas” (albariza soils) he continued as follows:

“if the grapes are of top quality, the whites need nothing more; it is true that some add a quarter of refined spirit to stabilize them, but they risk the wines becoming coarse as a result of this” (p 59)

If to this we add the fact that the local classification of vineyards according to quality criteria was well settled at the turn of the 18th century, we can infer that the parameters that a top-quality wine of the age had to meet were the following: a) the palomino fino variety, b) sourced from the best vineyards, c) fermented in butt, d) using indigenous yeasts, e) aged under the layer of flor that was formed immediately after the fermentation yeasts finished their job, f) with no added alcohol. This wine, before the generalization of the term “vino de manzanilla” (for which Cádiz was responsible), was plainly known locally as “vino blanco” (‘white wine’).

It is no more and no less than that, a white wine, that we offer now as the fifth vintage of Navazos-Niepoort 2012, produced by Equipo Navazos following exactly the same rigorous quality criteria employed by the best winemakers of the Bajo Guadalquivir some 200 years ago: palomino fino musts sourced from a historic albariza vineyard, fermented in butt with indigenous yeasts that impregnate the vines and the fermentation vessels themselves, aged for eigth months under a layer of flor thanks to the action of more indigenous yeasts that take control immediately after fermentation, and of course with not a single drop of added alcohol.

In the Sherry District the 2012 vintage was scarce in quantity but, likely partly because of it, simply fenomenal, the truly “perfect” vintage. This fact-together with our increasing experience in the winemaking of this revolutionary, although rooted in tradition, wine-has brought about this new edition to be again a step ahead of the previous ones in terms of quality. However, in any of its five vintages up to now, this is a wine we Equipo Navazos are especially fond of, perhaps because it is more our own “creation” than some of the others.

It is best enjoyed chilled at around 9ºC, with any type of lightly cooked fish and seafood, as well as lighter rice and pasta dishes, and salads of delicate flavors.

From the chalky soils to the glass, after a period under flor. There are aromas of tart cherry, redcurrant, iris root and sweet spice delicately layered over a solid, medium-plus mouthfeel. However, what stands out most in the Bricco Boschis is the extreme focus and sharpness of its fruit flavors. This 7.3-hectare site has 45-year-old vines that enjoy panoramic southeast and southwest exposures at 230 to 350 meters in elevation. This wine ages in Slavonian oak casks for 36 months (both 20-hectoliter and 100-hectoliter foudre). I didn’t make much wine, just 35hL/ha for the reds and 45hL/ha for the whites. I did only pump-overs for the extraction with no pumping down - infusion, really. The grape bunches and berries are much smaller, with crunchier and thicker skins. The Colle Vota Montepulciano also takes longer to mature, and this vineyard’s specific microclimate provides a longer hang time, producing a truly unique Montepulciano wine. Montepulciano d’Abruzzo wine made from the Colle Vota grapes are uniquely refined and light on its feet, combining elements reminiscent of Burgundy’s Pinot Noir and Piedmont’s Nebbiolo wines, while maintaining a Montepulciano backbone and soul.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0075/0338/0543/files/tiberiocollevota_1_6dc322d6-0389-41a6-9873-e50a3d50235c.jpg?v=1763926731
el-enemigo-malbec-2021
El Enemigo Malbec 2022

$21.99 6+ bottles (code: 6saves2)

92 points Wine Advocate

The 2022 Malbec hails from Adrianna Vineyard, contains 10% Cabernet Franc and was fermented entirely whole clusters before maturing for 15 months in foudre, tank and barrel. In the 2000s, when almost all of the other local wineries gave up on the indigenous red hondarrabi beltza vines, the Ameztoi family retained their old vines, in turn, lending their rosé such exceptional vibrancy and complexity. Rubentis, the region’s first pink wine, was inspired by the historic claret style wines which were once produced in the area long before the current global craze made rosé famous. The backbone of the blend comes from an old hondarrabi beltza vineyard planted in 1840, preserved by the Ameztoi family for generations. The tanks are then kept chilled to near freezing before bottling, which preserves the wine’s delicate, effervescent character and signature mousse. Interestingly, when I asked many producers how they adapted their winemaking in a challenging year like 2023, the most common answer was: “We didn’t change anything.” That’s a disappointing reality at many estates, but not here. De Grazia described 2023 as the most difficult vintage he’s experienced on Etna. Spring rains totaling around 400 millimeters triggered a devastating outbreak of downy mildew, cutting yields by up to 70% on the northern slopes. The eastern side was largely spared, which helps explain the strength of Terre Nere’s whites. The wet spring gave way to a hot, drought-stricken summer, leading to thicker skins and uneven ripening, as many vines shut down under hydric stress. Fortunately, light rains in September and ideal conditions through October helped save the harvest. The team responded with intense selection in both vineyard and cellar, followed by shorter macerations and minimal pumpovers. The resulting 2023s in bottle are some of the most exotic, finessed and elegant wines Terre Nere has ever produced. They deliver immense pleasure, but in some cases, such as the San Lorenzo, they reach a new level of depth and texture.

Etna Rosso San Lorenzo comes from 8 hectares of vineyards in the district of the same name in the municipality of Randazzo. Although very young in geological terms, the Elliptic soil is the oldest surface layer where it is possible to plant in the appellation. The reason is simple: millennia of lava flows have buried the oldest soils, leaving, in fact, only small and rare portions of the soil of the Elliptic. On the north side of Etna there are five or six Contradas that have “elliptical terroir”. Three of them, however, are spurious, as the igneous nature of the Elliptic is mixed with alluvial soils of a sedimentary nature due to the overflow of the Alcantara river. On the north side of Etna only three Contradas are “pure” elliptical terroir: Bocca d’Orzo, Calderara and San Lorenzo.

San Lorenzo is the Contrada that marks the North West border of the D.O.C.
