Medium-bodied, fleshy and vibrant, with a lively core of fruit, powdery tannins and a sapid, saline finish, it marks a return to a more classically proportioned style after several richer, riper vintages. The Geoffray family have banished herbicides and insecticides from their vineyards and number among the appellation's most conscientious farmers, working toward organic certification (something they've already attained for several cuvées, as indicated in the tasting notes). In the cellar, winemaking is traditional, with semi-carbonic maceration and élevage generally in foudre—though some small cuvées see a little new wood. A staple of France's best restaurants—and this writer's table—any readers who are not acquainted with these wines are warmly advised to seek them out. Despite the challenges of frost, disease and rain, the 2021s have turned out very well and mark a return to a cooler, crunchier style of Beaujolais that we haven't seen for several years.
- William Kelley, Robert Parker Wine Advocate

93 pts Vinous Media
Drinking Window 2027 - 2045
The 2023 Côte de Brouilly Cuvée Zaccharie is, as usual, a barrel selection aged in Burgundy barrels for 12 months with 10% new wood. His first harvest in 2019 generated considerable excitement, leading some French critics to prematurely dub him the next Clos Rougeard. While Anatole did receive some advice from Nady Foucault of Clos Rougeard, this guidance was relatively minimal. A more profound technical influence came from Michel Chevré, formerly of Clos de l’Ecotard. Today, the estate's viticultural practices have notably high standards. Anatole oversees a team of seven across the 21 hectares, emphasizing soil management, using grass and cover crops adapted to the specific needs of each vintage and employing bioprotection in the cellar. He cultivates his own yeast strains, conducts sulfur-free macerations and opts for extended aging in barrels and malolactic fermentations in barrel for select cuvées.

.

Soils: A mix of limestone-rich clays.
Winemaking: Cabernet Franc grapes are allowed a cold maceration period before fermentations commence, and total macerations can exceed a month. The new owner, the studied enologist, then computer engineer and co-founder of one of the biggest business consulting companies in the world, Anatole de la Brosse, returned to wine at almost 50 years old and has sold out his production quickly in France yet hasn’t opened up much export yet. He currently converts the former domaine, whose terroirs he believes "are great" to organic viticulture, with the assistance of technical consultant Michel Chevré. Also, Nady Foucault, former owner of the iconic Clos Rougeard, is consulting for him. The estate covers 15 hectares in the commune of Parnay, where they are located on the hillside. Rooting in clay-limestone soils, the vines average 35 years of age. About 95% of the vineyard is planted in Cabernet Franc in the Saumur Champigny AOC. The domaine also has a few plots of Chenin, which are used to produce the Saumur Blanc. Heavy investments have been made as well: the soil is now worked to avoid the use of chemicals; a new sorting table makes it possible to select the best fruits and to eliminate all the undesirable elements; a new destemmer scrapes the grapes without damaging them, which improves the quality of the maceration; a new 30-hectoliter pneumatic press gently presses the grapes; gravity is used instead of pumps; and the tanks are thermo-regulated for perfect control. No chemicals are added during the whole process except for small quantities of sulfur dioxide. The first three wines I tasted, two 2020s and one 2019, represent a promising start for this rejuvenated domaine with five generations of history.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0075/0338/0543/products/image_6a086d02-0034-4be6-ae6c-0a489337a2ee.jpg?v=1763966432
pascal-aufranc-julienas-2020
Domaine Pascal Aufranc Juliénas Les Cérisiers Les Crots 2023

This glory is made on 80-year-old vines and grown in mineral and clayey soil. 20% of the wine has been aged in neutral oak (i.e. not flavouring) the rest is aged in cement tanks.
