The 2022 Chablis Montmains 1er Cru offers scents of grapefruit and orange rind on the nose, less flamboyant than the Vaillons, yet showing impressive delineation already. The palate is well-balanced, with a tangy opening and hints of marmalade infusing the citrus fruit with an almost steely finish. This will need time in bottle.- By Neal Martin on July 2023

35% wood – slightly lower figures this year, especially compared to 2021. The fruit appears at once, though without too much reduction. Broad shouldered but clean and mostly with white fruit. A long pleasing and fruit rich finish. Drink from 2027-2032. Tasted: June 2023.

Located on the west bank of the Yvonne that divides the Chablis region at its core, it is also just south of Vaillons with a southeastern exposure. Considered to be one of the top premier crus west of the river, Montmains is forward in its youth, displaying more apple than lime flavors with a distinctive nutty nuance – Benoît says it is reminiscent of hazelnuts or almonds and speculates that this is due to the finer marl soils of this hillside.

Vine Age:
 45, 2.15 ha, sustainably farmed
Soil: Kimmeridgian marl, chunky limestone mixed with clay, deeper soils on a gentle slope
Winemaking: 3-4 hour prefermentation settling, natural yeast fermentation in tank and barrel
Aging: 10 months in tank (70%) and French oak barrels (30% used)
