The Domaine works with vines in two sub-climats: one called Sécher which is very stony calcareous single block of 4 acres. The other, and another called Roncières, is warmer and provides more opulence. Sécher (usually) accounts for 30% of the blend and provides intense mineral cut and structure. Well, that’s now complete: a spacious, chichi space with sofas, a walk-in cool-room to house back vintages and a large table for tasting. That’s not the big news. No, the headline is that in July 2022, Clerget bought Domaine Regis Rossignol-Changarnier and its eight hectares of vine. These were split with fellow winemaker Arnaud Baillot, though as Clerget put the deal together, he essentially got first dibs on which vineyards he wanted to add to his Pommard/Volnay-focused portfolio. Each ended up with four hectares. I didn’t make much wine, just 35hL/ha for the reds and 45hL/ha for the whites. I did only pump-overs for the extraction with no pumping down - infusion, really. I used some whole bunch on the reds, depending on the vineyard. I like the 2022 vintage as we have balance and freshness. The reds had been racked three or four weeks earlier to spend the second year in tank, and they will be bottled in March and April without filtration.”

This is a fine set of wines from Clerget, capped by strong showings of his Volnay Les Caillerets and Pommard Les Rugiens, both eclipsing the Clos de Vougeot that I felt showed a little too much stem influence (maybe 30% would have worked better than 50%). Clerget has been using WineGlobes for a couple of vintages now and experimented with a cuvée completely matured in the glass containers – his debut Volnay Clos des Angles. As I remarked to Clerget, I am unconvinced that they offer a viable alternative to oak barrels. Indeed, I feel he thinks the same way and mentioned that for 2023, that cuvée combines WineGlobe and oak barrel.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0075/0338/0543/files/yvonnClergetPommardRugiens1er_0387441a-b689-4948-82a3-7190bbfd9c21.png?v=1788366206
henri-prudhon-fils-saint-auburn-blanc-1er-cru-sur-gamay-2020
Henri Prudhon & Fils Saint-Auburn Blanc 1er Cru 'Sur Gamay' 2023

As the name implies, this parcel of approximately ¾ of an hectare sits on a hillside overlooking the neighboring hamlet of Gamay (directly east of Saint Aubin and a neighbor to Puligny). The reds are fresh, bright, and more high-toned with more perceptive acidity and tannic structure. Densities and fruit concentration are great, but maybe a touch less than 2022 and more red than dark red fruits, though not strictly so. Ageability is great for both styles/colors in both 2022/2023, it just matters more the style that you prefer. So, in general so far the whites seem more classic than the 2022s, while the reds are also classic with excellent quality. The big difference between both vintages is not a matter of quality, it just comes down to preference of styles. Led masterfully since 1996 by Albéric Bichot, Maison Albert Bichot has been present in Quebec for many years. It offers a wide range of wines, including this excellent Chablis. The nose, well-typed and full of finesse, reveals aromas of lemons, peaches, apples, and white flowers, punctuated by chalky, iodized, and smoky notes. On the palate, the attack is ample, fresh, with a fairly good volume and a certain tension that allows the fruity aromas to be restored. The evolution is not left out with a material that presents fat, but remains well balanced by a precisely dosed acidity that leaves a pleasant impression of freshness. Versatile and digestible! Serve at 12 °C. The order of the day is organic farming (though without certification, which allows for the use of stronger treatments in more challenging vintages), harvesting ripe yet clean fruit cropped at modest yields and with extended maturation—18 months on the lees in a combination of used oak barrels (mostly 228-liter, averaging 10 years old) and stainless steel, with final settling in tank for two to four weeks. After a series of sunny vintages, Virginie has started to vinify more wine in tank (Montmains and Valmur are now matured entirely in stainless steel), as she believes this helps retain more of the classically Chablisien signatures.

These wines are always concentrated and textural, among the most characterful to be found in Chablis. The range of premier cru bottlings is the focus at this address, typically attaining its apogee with the Forêts, Montée de Tonnerre and Vaillons bottlings. Their only grand cru, Valmur, is also well worth seeking out. However, long-term aging risks are to be expected due to variability from natural cork.

Clay and Kimmeridgean Limestone. Very stony topsoil.
