Grape: 100% Cannonau (Grenache), 15.5% abv
Terroir: .5 hectare site of calcareous granite soils, 2,132m above sea level, south facing
Limited: 1,000 bottle production (hand numbered)
Sites: Ghirada (Ghirada = Cru): Garaunele
Winemaking: Destemmed. Fermentation in open-top wood vats on the skins with 2-3 daily punching down for 15-20 days. Soft pressing post ferment. Aging for 12 months in large, neutral French oak tonneau. Refinement in bottle 12 months.
My Tasting Note
Youthful and deeper red ruby color, still has transparency. Pronounced aromas similarly rise easily with deep red and blue fruits, very fresh dark red to blue fruits of cherry, raspberries, crushed summer blueberries and blackberries. Notes of subtle smoke, savory nuances, with dried herbs, also very lifted and fresh in character in the nose. The palate has a med+/full body and tannin that are also ripe and perfectly integrated, a touch more structure here. The flavor intensity is high, but here to the weight is elegant and barely there, the wine floats over the palate with a ton of flavor and depth, with the mineral/stone component peaking out on the close and into the finish. Here to the finish is very persistent and long, well over a minute with the fruit, savory, herbs, minerality, and freshness that add up to another very pleasing close. Another outstanding wine!
