Tom's Tasting Note:
Light ruby red core, pale edges. The very pretty nose is an excellent balance of red fruits, spices, and earth.  Pronounced and fresh red raspberry and strawberry, spicy stemmy notes of black tea, black peppercorns, and cinnamon mingle with earthy forest floor notes. Medium bodied, with medium and fine grain tannins, and med/med+ acidity.  The fresh and elegant palate is pronounced and long through to the finish. This is an outstanding Pinot value that outdistances many a Bourgogne Rouge!  While this wine is approachable now for its primary fruit, it is built for longevity and will likely gain further complexity with a few years of cellaring.

The 2023 Goodfellow Family Cellars Willamette Valley Pinot Noir is composed entirely of declassified barrels from the estate's single-vineyard Pinot Noir program. The fruit is sourced from sustainably farmed, dry-farmed vineyards throughout the Willamette Valley, where mature vines and distinctive site character provide the foundation for the wine.

The 2023 growing season was among the latest and most measured in recent memory. A cool spring delayed bud-break and slowed early vine development, while a warm, dry late summer and autumn allowed for an extended ripening period. The long growing season produced wines of exceptional aromatic complexity, vibrant acidity, and moderate alcohol levels, balancing freshness and precision with impressive depth and concentration.

As with all Goodfellow Pinot Noirs, fermentations are conducted with 100% whole clusters and native yeasts in small 1.5-ton bins. Fermentations proceed slowly at relatively cool temperatures to emphasize aromatic complexity and site expression. The free-run wine is transferred directly to barrel, where it remains on its lees undisturbed throughout élevage. Cooperage consists of a combination of new and used French oak, primarily larger-format 500-liter puncheons alongside neutral barriques. The wine was aged for 19 months prior to bottling.
