Tom's Tasting Note
Lemon yellow gold color. White orchard fruits of green apple and pear, some sweet lemons too, mineral salinity, subtle nuances of lees and oak show pastry dough and subtle, salty butterscotch and hazelnuts. Very good complexity for the price! Med bodied, med/med+ acidity, a pronounced and dense palate and a long, impressive finish! Outstanding, especially for the $!
The 2023 Goodfellow Family Cellars Willamette Valley Chardonnay is Marcus Goodfellow's regional blend Chardonnay. Sourced from several of the same vineyard sites that feed the estate's single-vineyard bottlings: Temperance Hill, Durant, and Tsai, offering a broad snapshot of the vintage across the Willamette Valley.
While this wine is approachable now for its primary fruit, it is built for longevity and will likely gain further complexity with a few years of cellaring.
Vineyard Sources: Primarily Temperance Hill, Durant, and Tsai Vineyards (regional blend)
AVA: Willamette Valley
Farming: Sustainable and dry farmed
Winemaking: Whole-cluster pressed, native yeast fermentations, extensive lees aging. Restrained oak usage typical of the Goodfellow house style is mostly neutral with a small percentage of new French oak.
ABV: approx 13%
The 2023 growing season in Oregon was relatively cool and extended, producing Chardonnays with vibrant acidity, lower alcohols, and excellent site expression. Goodfellow's wines from the vintage have been noted for their tension, mineral character, and precision rather than richness.
