92+ pts John Gilman – A View from the Cellar
The regular bottling of Butteaux chez Michel is also nicely expressive out of the blocks and will taste good from the start. The wine’s aromatic constellation offers up a lovely blend of lime, tart pear, anise, chalky minerality, citrus zest and a gentle topnote of white flowers. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied and really has a great core of fruit this year, with lovely soil undertow, fine complexity and focus and a long, well balanced and classy finish.
This wine comes from four separate plots on the Butteaux slopes, in the western part of the Montmains valley. They are the most distant from the winery, but only 2 km away. The clays here are compact and contain marl. The wines made from these vines express great complexity on the palate. These are wines of character, excellent for enthusiasts.
Terroir: Kimmeridgian. Left bank. Strong presence of white and blue clay mixed with large blocks of marl oyster fossils. Fairly steep slopes. Very well ventilated. South-south-east exposure. Vines planted in 1971-1972.
