2021 Chinon Les Grezeaux
Bernard Baudry
Chinon, Loire Valley
Baudry's oldest 50-years-old vines are planted here in finer clays and alluvial soils mixed with medium to large stones, this is where the looser and degraded rock soils settle at the lower reaches of the slope as gravity and weather pulls them down the slope set below the winery on gently rolling slopes.

- Soil: Stony gravels over clay-silica subsoil
- Vines: The oldest plot of the estate, about 50 years of age.
- Vinification / Aging: Manual harvest. Fermentation of 15-20 days in cement vats, then fifteen months aging in unlined cement. Bottling two winters after harvest. No filtration
Sourced from a single vineyard located at the bottom of Chinon's slope on alluvial/clay soils, the 2019 Chinon Les Grézeaux is currently a bit shy in terms of revealing its fruit flavors. It’s also a hint reductive with its smoky bacon characters, but that's unimportant. What matters is the core of fruit and excellent focus. It's very relaxed and fluid with mouthwatering acidity. The tannins are more serious than the front and midpalate would have suggested and betray a little grittiness. Aged 15 months in cement, this could be opened in one to two years, but the concentration and structure offer drinking over a decade.
